what is 404 page regarding SEO?

Stefanc

404 is an error that occurs when the link is broken or doesn't exist.

404 errors are normal but they are undesirable for SEO, so the most effective way to solve the error is to use a 301 redirect. I use Yoast premium to do the redirects.

I hope this helps

Whether it's because someone has mistyped your URL or you forgot to change an old link, at some point, one of your prospective customers is going to land on a 404 error page.

The error page is shown whenever a server can't find the specified page. Unfortunately, most marketers see an error page as a "tech issue" and don't give it a second's thought.

404 will appear if you had the link to your post on let's say forum... and in meantime you deleted the post, but the link stayed on forum. One day someone clicks on that link and lands to "ooops... 404".

Because of that you can lose some amount of your traffic because you used to have well ranked kw and now theres nothing anymore

404 page an error message which indicates that URL address cannot be found. In order to fix 404 errors, from an SEO perspective, you can use a 301 redirect. 301 is an HTTP response code which signals to the user's browser and the search engine bots that your content has moved permanently from one URL to another one.

A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server. The 404 Not Found error might appear for several reasons even though no real issue exists, so sometimes a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for. The most common method is to retry the web page by pressing F5, clicking the refresh/reload button, or trying the URL from the address bar again.

There are some very different schools of thought out there regarding 404 error code pages. Some SEOs recommend:

Never allowing them - 301'ing every error page back to the home page or an internal category level page to preserve the maximum amount of link juice (in case someone links to a broken URL)
Letting any erroneous/mistyped URL 404.
Something in between - 301 some kinds of 404 pages and not others.

The 404 Not Found error, also called Error 404 or an HTTP 404 error, means that the web page you were trying to load was not found.
