Google+ (pronounced Google Plus) was a social network operated by Google. The service, Google's fourth foray into social networking, experienced strong growth in its initial years, although usage statistics were lower than other social networks. It differentiated itself from competing sites by allowing more transparency in who you share with and how you interact.

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of Google+ was its use of "circles," a way of categorizing connections into groups for easier control over what is shared with whom. Google+ was also integrated with a number of other Google services, and it provided features like "Stream" for posting updates and photos, "Hangouts" for video chat, and "Sparks" for sharing items of interest.

However, Google+ failed to gain significant market share against its rival social platforms, and Google decided to shut down the platform for consumers in April 2019 following significant data breaches and privacy concerns. Google+ was replaced by Google Currents for G-Suite customers in July 2020.

Launched in June 2011, Google+ was part of Google's attempt to compete with social media giants like Facebook. Google implemented Google+ into its other services, with the idea that the platform would become the social layer across all of Google's online tools. This meant that, if you used Google's many services (like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Search, etc.), you were also technically a part of the Google+ network.

The main features of Google+ included "Circles," "Stream," "Hangouts," "Sparks," and "Communities." "Circles" was a defining feature of the platform, which allowed users to organise their contacts into different groups (or circles) for sharing across various Google services and tools. "Stream" was similar to Facebook's News Feed, where you could see updates from your circles. "Hangouts" integrated with Google's messaging and video chat platform and "Sparks" was a recommendation engine for finding new content, though it was later removed. "Communities" allowed users to create and participate in discussions around shared interests.

While these features seemed promising, the broader market didn't respond as positively as Google hoped. By 2015, Google started distancing many of its core services from Google+, and in 2018, Google announced that they were gradually phasing out the platform. Apart from the lack of user engagement, the decision was also spurred by privacy issues connected with Google+. Google revealed that a bug in one of Google+'s People APIs had exposed the data of half a million users.

Google+ was officially shut down for consumers on April 2, 2019, and has since been replaced by Google Currents for its G-suite customers.

Google+ was Google's most significant attempt to compete with other popular social networking platforms. It was meant to offer a more privacy-centered, organized social networking experience. Still, despite some unique concepts, Google+ could not quite carve out a robust identity distinct from its competitors, ending up with insufficient user engagement ultimately.

Google's integration of Google+ across its services, meant to drive use of the platform, turned out to be a controversial move. For example, at one point, Google began requiring a Google+ account to comment on YouTube videos. This move led to a backlash from users who did not want to be forced into using Google+. Understanding this, in 2015, Google started to gradually separate and again, decouple its services from Google+.

Initially, Google+ profiles were a part of the Google Account setup process, but as Google recognized the lackluster performance of the platform, the connection was weakened. The privacy issues that came up in 2018, specifically the security vulnerability that led to the exposure of hundreds of thousands of users' private data, seemed to be the final straw.

Despite its shutdown, Google+ had some meaningful impacts on other Google services. An example of this is "Hangouts," which started as a feature of Google+ but later became a stand-alone product. Google Hangouts has since been replaced by Google Chat and Google Meet as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021.

Google+ is a testament to the fact that even technology giants can't always succeed in every endeavor. The social network arena, ruled by platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, proved challenging for Google to crаck into.

Since the consumer version of Google+ was shut down on April 2, 2019, it has been replaced with Google Currents for its G-suite customers, a platform primarily designed for facilitating organization-wide engagement and communication.

Google+ is NOT the Facebook killer which many think (or hope) it is. Off course Google would like to 'steal away' people from Facebook if they could. And yes, they will be doing some very smart retargeting advertising with it. But the essence of Google+ lies somewhere else: its about connections, data and people. With the social part of Google+ Google is gathering more data about us so they can give us our personalized web.
