fring is a peer-to-peer Mobile VoIP based internet telephony network founded by Avi Shechter,[1] formerly co–CEO of ICQ and a VP at AOL[2] co-founded by Boaz Zilberman[3] and Alex Nerst.[4] fring enables users to talk and chat using Skype, ICQ, Google Talk, MSN Messenger / Windows Live Messenger, AIM, Yahoo Messenger and SIP providers.[5] fring is headquartered in Israel, and has representation in Italy, UK, Taiwan and Germany.

The fring Application programming interface is an open API that gives developers access to fring's core network and mobile client. [20] The API opened to developers on the 18 June 2008. [21]

History

Launch

fring launched its P2P service during January 2007,[22] offering MoIP (mobile VoIP)[23] talk and chat over mobile phones via 3G,[24] GPRS or Wi-Fi Internet connections.[25] fring based communication utilizes existing 3G data plans instead of GSM (talk) minutes.[26][27]

Growth

As of October 2008, it is reported that more than 200,000 new users from 200 countries are now downloading, installing, and registering to use fring each month.[28][29][30] fring clocked 91,000 downloads in the 24 hours after it was launched on the App Store.[31]
