KVIrc is a multilanguage, graphical IRC client for Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS. The K in K Visual IRC was for a dependency to KDE, which became optional from version 2.0.0.
Features
KVIrc is able to connect to several servers at the same time (optional with SSL and/or IPv6). Unicode, ISO-8859-*-Codes, Asian and Windows-native character sets are supported. A special feature is the smart encoding, which allows the user to use 2 encodings at the same time; the user can send Unicode and read Unicode and CP-1252 for example.
Additional to the wide supported mIRC-Codes for bold, underlined and colored font, KVIrc owns graphical emoticon and avatar system. This feature can be disabled.
KVIrc has its own script language named KVS for extensions, addons and scripts. Every channel, query and DCC Chat is encryptable with Blowfish or AES/Rijndael.
With the split window mode the user can divide their channel window into 2, one for chat messages and the other for "commands" like joins/parts/mode changes. The size of the windows is variable, so the user is able to hide the command window.
The SocketSpy feature helps developers and users to watch the raw communication between client and server to debug.
Development
Stable releases are rare, but there are often Subversion snapshots[1] which are stable enough to use.[citation needed]
The latest Subversion version called Insomnia with the version number 3.9 is built on Qt 4. The release will be KVIrc 4. The latest stable release is 3.4.2 Shiny which is based on Qt 3 and is a bug fixed version of 3.4.0. In SVN Branch exists 3.4.3
On September 1, 2009 KVIrc4 was tagged as Release Candidate 1[2].
