ShareNow was launched on March 5, 2007 as izimi which was a free-to-download PC software product[1] that let users share any file with anyone else on the internet, without the viewer/recipient needing to download any special software other than a standard web browser.[2] The software also allowed users to post free classified ads which could be accessed by fellow users.[3] The software was used not only by individuals, but also in the business world, such as in the instance of workers in the health care field who needed instant access to documents stored by co-workers.[4]
In mid 2007, izimi changed its name to ShareNow and the service was re-launched, in beta, in April 2008. ShareNow is now a lifestyle social networking and file-sharing website which allows customization of the user's Profile page and it also allows files of any type to be uploaded onto the user's Media page (free file hosting) for others to view, download or comment on. User pages include a Sharewall which allows them to post their content (i.e. videos, pictures, audio files, presentations – any file type) onto the Sharewalls of other users. Sharewalls can therefore be used to organize competitions, auditions or casting calls;[citation needed] or simply used as a way of sharing files with other users. ShareNow also allows multiple profiles for the same username.
In April 2008, the comedy horror series, The Scream, starring Melissa Bacelar debuted on ShareNow.[5] ShareNow is the home of the internet-only show The Other Hef, a satirical look at Hugh Hefner’s lifestyle, and in July 2008, Internet celebrity Chris Crocker, took up residence on ShareNow, criticizing YouTube in the process.[citation needed]
Other celebrities on the site are hip hop artist Somaya Reece, Motown signer Keith Robinson, blogger B Scott of LoveBScott fame, Dr. Dre's son Curtis Young, Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC and model Megan Hauserman.[citation needed]
ShareNow, which is based jointly in Los Angeles, California and Bicester, England, was co-founded by Chris Chedgzoy and the British entrepreneur Nigel Robertson.[citation needed]
