Unity is the code name for a Trans-Pacific submarine communications cable in which Google is investing with other partners.[1] The cable is planned to have "multi-terabit" capacity.[1]

On 26 February 2008 Google and five telecommunications operators (Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI, Pacnet, and SingTel) said in a joint statement that the 6,200-mile undersea fiber-optic cable, connecting the United States to Japan, will cost $300 million. [2] The cable will have 5 fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 960 Gbit/s, and will be expandable to 8.[3] This will give the cable a total capability of 7.68 Tbit/s.

The cable is being constructed by NEC and Tyco Telecommunications (a subsidiary of Tyco Electronics)[4].

The cable landing points are:

December 2009 - The cable has now been laid and joined. At present it is in the testing stage, and is scheduled to go into service sometime in the first three months of 2010.
